Tim Karp
Good morning classmates, my name is Timothy Karp and I am running to be your future Secretary of Education. There are many problems that exist in this world that surround the education of schools and if I am elected, I will make sure that everything will be fixed no matter how much work and or time it takes.
2) Since our high school completion rate is only 80%, I would definitely want to increase that number. One plan that me and my team have proposed is to take the percentage of kids who are on the verge of dropping out and put them into a class that fits into their schedule so they can learn what they are struggling in. This will ensure that these kids are focusing on what they need help with and that it will transform dropout students to students who end up going to college and succeeding. This is so because it allows them to find who they truly are and how strong their work ethic is. Also, my team and I would make class more fun by including more teacher to student connection and allowing the students to participate more. When a student participates more in class, they understand the topic more and it will allow them to thrive is school academics. We would encourage students to participate more in class by offering bonus points and other stuff of that nature and if students participate more, they will understand the topic more than before so it will increase their intelligence on a subject.
3) My personal opinion on standardized testing is that it is isn’t the best way to rank or grade students and that is for many reasons and that it should be eliminated. One reason why standardized testing isn’t a good way to rank students is because it stresses students out just to know that it is a test and that it is not a project. Kids can do good in class, but when the test approaches they freak out and it doesn’t show their true potential in a specific subject and that is not right because it is super biased and unfair. I do believe that standardized testing does serve a purpose, but it doesn’t do it effectively and that is why it should be in the curriculum in the first place. The positive effects of standardized testing is that it shows who is performing well, who is not, and where improvements need to be made, etc. On the other side, the negatives of standardized testing is that it puts stress on the students and it forces them to cram notes and other things like that and it just ends up showing a score that isn’t true to that student’s abilities. For teachers, a positive is that it gives them a set curriculum to teach and a negative is that they see their students struggling when they are outstanding students.
5) Our main method other than standardized testing in schools is to have differentiated homework and schoolwork assignments. This will give school students to pick what format the want to do their homework in while they are still learning the same curriculum so they are not structured to do what everyone has to do. Even though they are still learning the same curriculum, they are showing their skill in a different format. When these students do projects, they wouldn’t be nervous because their is no test in sight and it shows their true potential intelligence about subject without them going through crazy study sessions. SInce the students will be assessed by the teachers on their projects, the teacher can also be assessed to show how good they are teaching the curriculum or how well their students perform. The grades on these group projects will boost up the motivation of the students because they are getting good grades on the curriculum while teachers are greatly viewed by chairpeople because of how well their students are actually doing.
6) The big question in the United States education department is how do we ensure that students are college and career ready when they are about to graduate from high school? My team and I believe that students would be college and career ready because of all the unique options as classes that have been introduced into the school curriculum. Also classes that can provide students with the skills of the outside world should be implemented into schools like PIG and Economics. Another thing is that we should increase the difficulty of work because college is not easy and students have to b prepared on that level because if their not, then that would not be good.
7) My team and I plan to make college more affordable by introducing multiple important factors. One factor to make college more affordable would be to decrease the amount of unnecessary spending on new buildings and technology. This will encourage schools to lower the tuition because they would have a decent amount of money left over due to not buying new buildings and technology. We would also want to persuade colleges to lower their tuition, but not eliminate it so colleges can still have money to use. The last factor that my team and I have conducted to make college more affordable is the increase the amount of scholarship opportunities so less students have to take out students loans.
8) Even though education has been notified as the great equalizer, as Secretary of Education, I believe that this saying is not true. There are many factors that contribute to my final judgement about this issue. One reason why education cannot be considered as the great equalizer is because not every school in every states has the same teachers and resources at their fingertips. Every teacher is different in their own way and one may teacher a subject better than the other. Also, technology can come into play. For example, in Mepham High School, we have a Mac lab and students can use it whenever they want for help and t get work done as well. While we have this working in our system, not every school has the right amount of money to buy these things to support the students and this can result in bad high school graduation rates. One statistical fact that shows that education is not the great equalizer is the chart of high school graduation rates on Long Island. Currently, Syosset has a 99% graduation rate and Hempstead has a 38% graduation rate. This shows you that this great equalizer does not exist and that not every student is receiving the same educational help. My team and I will change this by allowing schools to have a set budget so they can spend that money on education improvements do it can help students with education help.
9) Americans should trust me to improve American education because I will make every student feel like their are gaining an amazing education and feel like they belong in the classroom and that they are not lost when the teacher starts teaching. I will eliminate standardized testing to have better grade results and teacher assessments on students, there will be multiple choices for homework so there is not a set system, and there will be a school nation budget that is placed so every school will have the right amount of money to improve the school in a way that helps out both the students and the teachers.
- There are many strengths in our education system today which include programs, classes, teachers, college preparedness, and academic achievements. The programs and teachers in our school community is very broad, as well as everywhere else, which allows students to be free and choose the classes they want and what they think will benefit them in the future when they make their transition to college. Also, guidance counselors play a major role in the school communities. Guidance counselors help students prepare for colleges because they bring them through the whole college application process. Another thing that can prepare students for college is the SAT and ACT prep classes because it shows them how to get good grades on the major tests need to get into most colleges. For example, I want to be a pharmacist when I get older and Mepham High School has offered many classes that can get me on the right track. I am currently taking College Genetics this semester and College Human Anatomy next semester and those two classes will be sure that i am prepared for college. Also, my guidance counselor has helped me get through a lot of tough times throughout my four years at Meham High School, especially the college application and that is why I am going to be so prepared when I walk into the college of my choice and why the education system has so good aspects to it.
